Chapter I: Peter Visits the Nursery
All children grow up – except one. His name is Peter Pan.
Wendy knew she would grow up when she was just two years old. One day, she was playing in the garden. She picked a flower and ran to her mother. Mrs. Darling looked at her and said, «Oh, why can’t you stay like this forever?» After that, Wendy understood she couldn’t stay little.
The Darling family lived at Number 14. Before Wendy was born, her mother, Mrs. Darling, was the most important person in the house. Mrs. Darling was very beautiful. She had a sweet smile and a special kiss on her lips. Wendy could see the kiss, but no one could ever catch it.
Mr. Darling, Wendy’s father, loved Mrs. Darling very much. Many men wanted to marry her, but Mr. Darling was clever. He arrived at her house before the others and asked her first. She said yes, and they got married.
After their wedding, Mrs. Darling started drawing pictures of babies. Soon, they had three children: Wendy, John, and Michael.
When Wendy was born, Mr. Darling worried about money. He sat on the bed with Mrs. Darling and a piece of paper. He added numbers and said, «Can we afford to keep her?»
Mrs. Darling looked at him and said, «Of course we can, George!»
When John and Michael were born, it was the same. Mr. Darling worried, but in the end, they kept all three children.
The family didn’t have much money, so they couldn’t hire a regular nurse. Instead, their nurse was a big dog named Nana. Nana was very good at taking care of the children. She gave them baths, stayed by their beds at night, and walked them to school. Everyone loved Nana – except Mr. Darling. He worried that the neighbors might think it was strange to have a dog for a nurse.
Mrs. Darling loved her children very much. Every night, after they were asleep, she sat by their beds and tidied up their dreams. She looked at the thoughts in their heads, just like tidying up a messy drawer.
